DON’T MISS OUT

I feel honored to be selected as one of the cohort of writers this year representing Jewish voices in theater. I’m so looking forward to diving into my script, especially since particular attention is being paid to the Jewish themes of the play, all while being surrounded by a loving community who cares so deeply about this type of work.

WHIPPING BOY & THE PRINCE READING AT THE STUDIO THEATER IN NYC

ONE NIGHT ONLY

Thursday, August 10th @ 7 PM

The Studio Theater @ Theater Row

410 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036

The piece featured myself (baby's first time acting on stage in 5 years!!), James Kautz, Chris Ceraso, Jaime Lamchick, and Michael Gaston.

It was directed by Jenn Susi.  It was produced by myself, Jenn Susi, Alejandra Venancio, and Adam May.

Synopsis: Somewhere in a kingdom across the sea, Prince Edward is in trouble again and his whipping boy, Will, is about to suffer the consequences.  Nothing new, really, except that the young Majesty is on the brink of puberty.  And a whole lot of feelings are about to come out.  The Whipping Boy & the Prince examines the tumultuous, multifaceted relationship between Edward and Will, and the taboo act that draws them together:  a raw examination of kink, class, divinity, and power.

This is what I wrote about the reading:

I was reminiscing recently about where this play came from.  And the truth of it is, it is marrow deep.  This play came from someplace deep within my body, because that’s what I try to do: write body plays.  Robert Askins once said to me that bees make honey and playwrights make plays, and this, dear reader, is my honey. This is what I was born to make.

This play is about a long held shame, and it is very much my intention that those who see it, will see themselves and be able to release a part of themselves locked in self loathing, very much in the same way that I was able to do in the process of writing it and bringing it to the stage.

This is a picture of me holding my baby for the first time at the Drama Book Shop. (Picture taken by the great Alejandra Venancio, the OG Zephyrus!) It is a surreal and beautiful thing to hold a little creation of yours in your hands.  Mind blowing.

The Shop put it up as a recommended work if you liked Hadestown, which made me go WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

You can order a copy of DISCUS at the Concord Theatricals website here.

Or, you can pick up a copy of it at the Drama Book Shop

I am thrilled to announce that DISCUS will be available in (hopefully) spring 2023 for publishing and licensing by Samuel French.

I have to pinch myself.  If you had told younger me that I would have not one, but two plays, available through Samuel French, I would have not been able to stop crying for two days.

I am deeply grateful to the team at Sam French (Concord Theatricals) and to the DISCUS team as well.

GRADUATING FROM WRIGHT CLUB!

This week I had to say goodbye to Wright Club sponsored by The Amoralists Theatre Company.

It was truly such a wonderful experience working and I will miss it very much.

This is what the group said about my work at the graduation ceremony, which I will treasure for a long long time:

"Becca delicately turns the handle on the little door to her heart and once the door swings open, we see deserts, oceans, skies, and stars.  And Becca.  And us.”
